Kauai Deep Sea Fishing

Most Kauai shared boat and fishing charters will be departing from Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue or Port Allen Harbor on the south shore of Kauai, which is approximately (15 minutes from Poipu).

The beautiful island of Kauai offers great fishing almost everywhere due to the natural underwater topography and deep water close to shore. The big game fish come in to feed from these deep waters and this is what provides you with such a great opportunity to catch one. On many areas of the island the water will drop off to more than 1000' just one-quarter mile off shore, then drop again to 3100' a mile off shore and then to more than 6500' just three miles off the shoreline. The boats don’t have to travel far at all, in fact the possibility of finding the very largest fish within minutes of your Kauai sport fishing departure happens quite often for many of our anglers.

If you depart From Nawilwili Harbor, these boats will usually run back and forth rom Anahola to Makahuena right along the 40 fathom and 1000 fathom ledges. It literally takes 10 minutes to be on top of this lane/ fishing grounds, and this means you are fishing instead of running out to some point hours away where you are “hoping” there might be some fish. The FADS (Fish Aggregation Devices) are also close to shore and the Marlin, Mahi’s and Tuna’s like to congregate in the waters around these FADs.

Since deep water surrounds the island of Kauai, in the same magnitude as as the sharp cliffs of the Grand Canyon, as a consequence and bonus to anglers, the Mahi Mahi, Ono and Ahi, that are usually found at sharp drops and pinnacles, are now much closer to shore than on some of the other Hawaiian islands.

The island of Kauai lies in the direct path of the migration patterns of pelagic (open ocean) game fish. Therefore, Kauai offshore waters offer a variety of some of the most sought after game fish in the world including: Six species of billfish (Blue, Black, Striped, Short-nosed Spearfish, Sailfish, and Swordfish), five different species of tuna (Yellow fin, Bigeye, Skipjack, Wavy back, and Albacore), Mahi Mahi (Dorado), and Ono (Wahoo). There are also many near-shore and bottom species that you can fish for as well including Uku (Green Job fish), Ulua, (Giant Trevally), Blue and Grey Snapper, Kahala, (Amberjack) and Mano (Shark) to name just a few. All of these fish are good for eating, some are considered delicacy fish, only served at some of the finest of seafood restaurants.

The State of Hawaii has placed Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in the waters surrounding the main Hawaiian Islands. These buoys attract schools of tuna and other important pelagic fishes, such as dolphin fish (Mahi Mahi), wahoo (Ono), and billfish. FADs allow fishermen to easily locate and catch these species.
